Namibian History
The San people have inhabited what we today call Namibia for about 2,000 years. But
its only since the 15th century that we can speak of consistent settlement by the Herero
and Ovambo tribes who came from central and east Africa into the north of Namibia in
search of grassland for their cattle. Namibia was colonized by Germany in 1884 and from
then became known as South West Africa. In 1892 the germans suppressed the uprising
Herero and Nama tribes and killed a shocking 80% of their population.
In 1915, during the First World War, South Africa took over the territory of Namibia.
Finally in 1990 the Nation gained independence under its first president Sam Nujoma.
Climate
When is the best time to travel to Namibia?
That depends on your interests and what you want to see. We give you a rough idea what
to expect but the weather is unpredictable especially in the last few years as the result of
global warming.
With 300 days of sunshine a year Namibia is one of the sunniest countries in the world.
In general the climate is hot and dry with fluctuations during the seasons or sometimes
even in one day. The rainy season is from December to March. April and May are sunny,
mainly clear with green vegetation. June to August are sunny months with clear days and
cold temperatures at night, these are the best months for wildlife spotting. |
| |
| January: |
A rainy month with high humidity. |
| February: |
One of the wettest months of the year. Animals are harder to spot due to
the lush vegetation but its one of the best months for bird watching. |
| March: |
The last month of the wet season, wet and humid. |
| April: |
Very nice climate, increasingly dry, green landscape, lots of clear weather. |
| May: |
Very nice climate, increasingly dry, green landscape and clear skies. |
| June: |
Little chance of rain, the nights are getting cold and fall below 10c and
even lower in desert areas. Daytime temperatures are still pleasant. |
| July/August: |
Two of the main winter months and the best for wildlife spotting. The
days are warm and sunny, the nights are cold and we recommend packing
warm winter clothing. |
| September: |
Mornings become less chilly but temperatures in the day are not too hot
yet. Its a beautiful month to travel. It is dry and skies are clear. |
| October: |
One of the hottest and driest months of the year. |
| November: |
Very hot and dry but also the chance of an early start of the rainy season
and cloudy skies in the afternoon. |
| December: |
Unpredictable weather going from dry to rainy season and everything
comes to life. |
