Zambian History
The first human fossil ever discovered in Africa gave evidence that humans were present in Zambia for at least 2 million years. The earliest modern human living in the area, were the Khoe-San People (hunter and gatherer) who inhabited the region until the 4th century, then the Bantu (first farmers) started to migrate from the north. Today the country is almost entirely made up from Bantu speaking people.

By the 11th and 12th century advanced society emerged and long distance trade and copper mining developed. In 1820 the Portuguese settled in Zambia. In 1851 the British David Livingston started a
journey up the Zambezi River and become the first European to see Mosi-ao-Tunya (Tokaleya for: the smoke that thunders), the Victoria Falls, which he named after Queen Victoria. The British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes took over the whole of Zambia by the end of the 19th century. In 1911 the territory was named North Rhodes. Rhodes wanted to make Africa British from Cape Town to Cairo.

In 1920 one of the worlds biggest copper occurrence was discovered in Zambia, which attracted large investments from abroad. The management and all the skilled jobs were in the hands of Whites. In 1948 the first African Mineworkers Union was formed who fought against those circumstances. Only in 1964 did Zambia become independent with Kenneth David Kaunda as the president.

Climate
When is the best time to travel to Zamiba?

That depends on your interests and what you want to see. We give you a rough idea what to expect but the weather is unpredictable especially in the last few years as the result of global warming.

Due to its geological location Zambia receives a lot of rain between November and April and in some areas camps and parks close down for a few months. The further north you go the earlier the rain starts and the later it leaves. The dry season is cold and dry from May to August and hot and dry in september and October.

January:
Is the month with the most rain.
February:
Still very wet.
March:
Is the last month of the rainy season and the rain starts to get a little less.
April:
The rain eases down more.
May:
Only a few showers a day and the vegetation is beautiful and green.
June:
The days are mainly clear and warm but nights can be cold. We
recommend packing warm winter clothes.
July:
Temperatures get a little cooler. The weather is perfect for bushwalks. The
nights can be cold. We recommend packing warm winter clothes.

A very dry month with rising temperatures.

Is the hottest month of the year with the first signs of the rainy season.
